Travel Local
You don’t need to travel to exotic places to capture Travel Photos.
You don’t need to travel to exotic places to capture Travel Photos.
When we think of travel photography, we usually think of capturing images of exotic places: The Pyramids, Niagara Falls, and The Leaning Tower of Pisa to name a few. But the truth is that we have bags of opportunity in our own backyard.
This weekend for example. I folded my Brompton into the Prius and headed up to Seattle with a fuzzy idea of riding around the UW grounds. My priority was some exercise outdoors with Liddy, but I always like to have my camera with me.
I parked at the north end of Lake Union, near Gasworks Park. The Burke Gillman Trail was across the street. I unfolded my Brompton, attached Liddy’s sag wagon, and started peddling. At Sand Point I noticed a fleet of sailboats racing on Lake Washington. As a crow attracted to a shiny thing, I turned onto a path taking us down to the lake.
I have passed this place many times and have never seen it. As I was in no particular hurry, with no particular destination, I took the opportunity to explore. For the racing sails on the lake, I was wishing for my longer lens, but there were a lot of subjects down near the beach.
I liked the symmetry of these Hobie Cats lined up along the fence with their bold numbers showing.
I found these two shots of the dingies clustered together, each covered by a protective tarp, interesting. Sailing Dingy Cluster is so chaotic that the chaos is acceptable to my eye.
The previous shots are not what I would think of as prize winners, but they are the quality that puts some interest into a travel story such as you might write here on Medium. They don’t qualify for PSA Travel Division competition because they are generic. They could have been taken anywhere.
These last two shots were taken some years ago on Lake Union on a very sunny day in May. There is no arguing that the location is in Seattle. (I know… a rare sunny day in May.) Track down the owner of these sailboats, to get a property release, and they could be used in a travel brochure. We don’t need a release to enter them into PSA competition.
My point is that I was only an hour’s drive from home. To me, this is not an exotic location, but to a reader in Europe or Asia… A totally different perspective.
