The Old Barn
Thoughts on an abandoned building.
Thoughts on an abandoned building.
The old barn sits on the pasture’s edge, not yet overrun by blackberries.
Soon.
Moss is quietly working to convert the roof into dust. The cab of an old truck almost cropped out of the picture hides behind a blackberry bramble.
What is it about old abandoned things that attract us? Do we identify with them because they are old? Or is it the questions about what went before? Somebody must have needed this structure. It is large. It would have been expensive to build. And now? And now it is left to nature. It is left to decay. It has outlived its usefulness. It is too much effort to take it down, so it stands as a monument of a different time.
In the past few months, Liddy and I have cycled by this old wreck of a barn on many occasions. It is best viewed while speeding downhill; I usually pass it before the value of the scene registers. This day, I remembered to gear down. To stop and pull out the camera. I need to do this more often.
In my 70s, I can, in many ways, identify with this poor old wreck. But, in my 70s, I am alive. I cycle to stay fit. I cycle to enjoy more of the world. I carry a camera to capture my discoveries for myself, and sometimes to share with my friends.
Please enjoy, and please, count me among your old friends.
