The Christmas Markets of Germany are renowned throughout Europe to the point that they are being copied by other communities throughout the world.
As it was everybody’s first Christmas in Germany, we all wanted to check out the famous Christmas Markets. Lots of people enjoying Glühwein and bratwurst of all description. We went out to three markets: Kaiserslautern, Saarbrucken, and Rothenberg.
Kaiserslautern
Kaiserslautern is near the Ramstein-Meisenbach Air Force Base, so it is a favorite town for the Americans posted here. The commercial center is as modern as any comparable city in America, and it is easy to get by without a comprehensive knowledge of German. This made the market here a good introduction as it is relatively small.
Saarbrucken
Next, we went west to Saarbrucken where we had more opportunities to shop and as it was Saturday night, the crowds were larger.
Rothenberg
On the Monday before Christmas, we traveled to Rothenberg where the age of the city, the architecture of buildings was quite overwhelming. Cap that off with all the shops set up to sell Christmas decorations and other trinkets, well…
We had a very enjoyable Christmas and trust you did as well.
