Dinner On the Bay

May Six Word Photo Story Challenge: “Water”
Dinner was enjoyed on the water.
It was a beautiful evening on Commencement Bay. We scored a table on the deck at Katie Downs. June ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc to go with her French Dip. I chose a litre of beer to accompany my Cobb Salad. Harp, to be exact.
Our dinner was leisurely, and the food was great. A very lovely evening.
As anticipated, I awoke early this morning to the sound of my heart struggling to keep time. Too much beer. Alcohol will truly be the death of me.
I climbed out of bed to go pee. A crescent moon was visible outside the window. It had just risen above Mount Rainier, dirty rose gold in colour. There is a lot of dirt in the air because the weather has been still, hot and dry. A pretty colour, nonetheless.
It was early. I went back to bed. The act of moving had given my heart some incentive to get it together. Laying back in my pillow, I could hear it had resumed its comforting, irregular beat.
The wind outside was rising. My heartbeat was lost in the not-so-subtle noises of wind rushing through the fir trees. They were really rocking it out there. Liddy came to me from the foot of the bed. I put my arm around her to give her the feeling of security she was looking for.
By five o’clock, the light had grown so that I could enjoy the sensuous curves of my wife next to me. As the sun continued to rise in the sky, it was painting the firs in a wonderful golden glow.
I enjoy this time in the morning. Not so much the sound of our neighbour’s truck when it starts up at five. The turd has a huge driveway he could use but prefers to park below our window.
Truck noises aside, I love the light and the sounds of the morning. Heartbeat, then the wind, then any woodpeckers. Even the rain on the gazebo when it happens. I used to hear the birds, crickets, and frogs, but those have been replaced by the white noise of tinnitus.
I have so many reasons to be melancholy as my body ages, but how can one not be glad to be awake, glad to be alive, glad to know that there will be another opportunity to enjoy dinner on the water.
